The journey to get thicker hair is more complex than we think. First, because genetics plays a huge role when it comes to hair thickness.
As both my parents have thin hair, I, of course, ended up having even thinner hair. My parents always tell the story that it was impossible to get any hair adornment to stay in place in my extremely thin hair.
But like everything in life, we always think our neighbor grass is greener. So, guess what. Of course, I have always wanted to have thicker hair.
In addition to the genetics factor, many are the reasons why our hair will not look as voluminous as we would like to. Luckily with today’s advancements in chemistry and access to information, there are many ways to get thicker hair.
Throughout my 30-year old life, I have monitored my hair behavior and identified which habits and products worked well and which didn’t count as much towards my ultimate goal. Let me share it with you.
GET THICKER HAIR BY CHECKING YOU HORMONES
When I was a teenager, I had a real serious acne problem. According to my dermatologist, my acne was due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), so she recommended me to take Roaccutane in combination with birth control pills.
Well, the acne was gone, but I kept taking the birth control pills. Because my hair would always look full, many people started asking me If I was using extensions. I couldn’t be happier. This is because most birth control pills are filled with large amounts to the estrogen hormone.
However, birth control pills have its flaws. Among other collateral effects, taking birth control pills can make it hard for you to increase lean body mass. That’s why, in 2015, after taking several exams, my endocrinologist recommended trying to stop taking birth control pills in order to look more fit.
The first thing I noticed was that my hair changed a lot. The volume I knew was totally gone in a matter of weeks.
These changes happen anytime we adjust our exposure to estrogen hormone. So expect changes when starting or leaving birth control pills.
I haven’t gotten pregnant yet, but I have heard the same happens to pregnant women. They got amazing hair during the pregnancy due to the surges of estrogen hormone. However, the ugly truth shows its face after pregnancy. They start to lose a lot of hair.
Of course, not only birth control pills and pregnancy can affect your hormones. Thyroid problems and diseases, as well as eating disorders, may also affect your hormones and therefore, your hair behavior.
Remember to consult a specialized doctor, before start taking any sort of medication. Exams might be required in order to better diagnose your case.
GET THICKER HAIR BY CHANGING FEW HABITS
Avoid ponytail at all costs. If worn frequently it might cause your top roots to weaken over time. Prefer using a low bun. Besides being healthier for your hair, it’s extremely fashionable nowadays.
NOT WASHING YOUR HAIR FREQUENTLY
While washing your hair every day might be bad, not washing it all is even worse. The thing is, after 2 days the natural oil that comes out of your scalp kinda clogs your hair roots, making it harder for it to breathe. Besides that, you gotta find a shampoo that will help create more volume in your hair. I particularly love L’Oréal Volumetry Shampoo. I’ve been using it for 6 months and I find it really helpful towards my ultimate goal of getting a voluminous hair. When buying these shampoos, avoid getting it from Amazon. I would rather order it from an established European Store, such as Look Fantastic, in order to avoid counterfeit products. You can check it out by clicking here.
WRONG PILLOW SHEETS
Using the wrong pillow sheets is not only bad for hair, but it is also bad for your skin. Make sure you get silk pillow sheets in order to guarantee a nice soft surface to your hair and skin. Remember you actually spend a third of your day sleeping, so, this is kind of a big deal. This 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase I found it’s just great.
GET THICKER HAIR BY MINIMIZING STRESS
A busy life is one of the biggest causes of poor hair quality, causing our body to dedicate most of its energy toward fighting stress rather than improving our hair overall quality.
The pressure that our bosses put on us to deliver greater results in a short period of time, makes us spend more time in the offices. Now, with COVID-19, the day has no end. This reduces our free time. Our jobs take too much time of our day, that we don’t even have time to go to the supermarket during the week to buy fresh ingredients.
For those who cannot afford to work less, the key is to find a way to shop online for fruits and vegetables. This way you guarantee fresh ingredients every day.
Along with lack of time, emotional problems caused by working in a stressful environment, is also a problem.
Many times, not our boss, but our equals make our job to feel more stressful than it already is. I once had a very toxic colleague at work. She would talk alone and sigh all the time. Often, I was doing my job, minding my own business and she would surprise me with random questions regarding her own duties. If I couldn’t precisely answer her, she would sigh, as If I was a disappointment to her. This caused extreme pressure on me because most often I was concentrated on my own duties and couldn’t answer her the way she wanted. Notice that she wasn’t my boss, but yet caused my microenvironment to get very toxic, besides bothering the others in the room.
Luckily working at home is here to stay. But, If you still live such a situation, try talking to your boss to find a better desk spot or even change rooms. Lucky for me, this person left the company.
GET THICKER HAIR BY EATING HEALTHY
Along with stress, a poor diet might also contribute to hair shedding.
There was a time in my life when I was working way too much and not having enough time to buy fresh ingredients and prepare more natural meals. It was really sad. Every day I would watch my hair health fade away. I started to experience some hair loss.
It is said that is normal for people to shed 50 to 100 strands of hair per day. It is important to monitor your daily hair shedding by checking your hairbrush, combs, clothing, floors, and shower. This way you can track your hair levels.
Besides that, I also felt like my hair was taking longer than normal to grow. All this combined was a clear sign that I was unhealthy on the inside and something has got to change.
I switched to a healthy diet filled with nutritious vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. In fact, this has much to do with that old saying “you are what you eat”. When it comes to hair and skin health, certain nutrients help your hair get thicker.
I consulted a nutritionist to create a diet that would guarantee enough vitamins, antioxidants and minerals in my daily diet.
GET THICKER HAIR BY TAKING THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTES
I know it’s kinda impossible to get thicker hair overnight. But I noticed that after a while, changing my diet style wasn’t still enough to see clear results in my hair. I was already doing lots of positive things towards my hormone-free journey to thicker hair. So, with the help of my nutritionist, I decided then to take a few vitamins and supplements. I’ve rounded up the vitamins and supplements that worked the best for me.
A diet rich in zinc is absolutely vital to maintain our overall health, since low levels of zinc can cause problems that go beyond the hair scope. It can affect many organ systems, including the immune, gastrointestinal, skeletal, reproductive, integumentary and central nervous systems.
Regarding hair issues, the absence of this mineral in our blood can make it hard for us to get thicker hair. That is so, because Zinc help forming skin cells, thus acting as an anti-inflammatory element in our body. Therefore, it directly helps stabilizes the levels of oil production of our sebaceous gland, which is essential to keep our hair from shedding more than necessary.
You can get zinc from oyster, shrimp beef (liver), chicken, and fish. Notice that vegetarians might find it challengeable to obtain enough zinc. It’s extremely necessary for vegetarians to follow a diet rich in pumpkin seeds, nuts, spinach, and mushroom in order to compensate the lack of meat.
You might not know if you are the right candidate to take a zinc supplement until you talk to a doctor and take blood exams. Start monitoring for signs of zinc deficiency, other than thin hair, such as diarrhea, allergies, thinning hair, weak immunity, to better inform your doctor.
As many of you know, I spent the last few years living 3 blocks away from the beach in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro. Even though I go to the beach pretty much every weekend I don’t know how on earth I manage to get Vitamin D deficiency, but I did.
As you can see, it is very normal for this to happen. So, my friends from California and Florida, watch out. According to a study, 41,6% of adults in US experience Vitamin D absence.
Our body needs the sun to produce Vitamin D from cholesterol. So, if you don’t get enough exposure to the sun for whatever reason, you got to watch out for this. Especially now, during the COVID-19 crises, most people are quarantined at home. At this very moment, I bet Vitamin D deficiency worldwide is hitting the highest levels in history.
Along with hair loss, many other symptoms are related to Vitamin D deficiency. The most common ones are:
- getting sick or infected often (watch out for COVID-19)
- fatigue and tiredness
- bone and back pain
- slow wound healing
- bone loss
- muscle pain
At the slightest sign of Vitamin D deficiency, I think you should totally visit a doctor to get your vitals checked. If you can’t visit the doctor, you can start by eating foods like fatty fish, portabella mushrooms, egg yolks, cheese, and fortified dairy.
You can also try Carlson Labs Vitamin D3, one of the best options out there, as it contains high levels of pure Vitamin D3 per serving.
Many people ofter get confused between using biotin or hydrolyzed collagen supplements for hair health. If I were you I wouldn’t spend my money buying biotin, you know why? Well, biotin can be found in foods you can add to your diet, while hydrolyzed collagen cannot be consumed in food!
Besides that,I recommend you to always look for a hydrolyzed collagen. This means that the collagen is broken down into very pieces, making it possible for your body to more efficiently absorb it.
Collagen will help your hair achieve the desired thickness and volume while making hair less susceptible to breakage.
Besides that, Collagen adds more elasticity and tightness to your skin, which is great for those searching for a sharp look after losing a lot of weight.
Vital Proteins Collagens Peptides
20oz with HA + Vitamin C
Vital Proteins Collagens Peptides is of the best choices out there. It contains 20g of collagen, 80mg of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), and 90mg of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) per 20g serving, which is great, compared to other brands. As you know, I always recommend buying cosmetics and supplements from established stores or straight from the manufacturer’s website. Luckily Vital Protein has its own website, just click here to check it out.
The way to get a thicker hair is a true journey, specially without the help of hormones. You should try everything you can, because the pursue for a thicker hair is also a purse for a healthier lifestyle. Either way you will win.
Just make sure to stay away from techniques that will end up hurting your hair scalp, such as sleeping with wet hair wrapped in a towel. This can make your hair look good for a day, but in the long run, you will regret it.
